Located near the stunning White Sands National Monument, this New Mexico city attracts many tourists. Alamogordo was established in 1898 with the arrival of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad. The city's name means "fat cottonwoods" in Spanish and was named after a grove of cottonwoods. Alamogordo also is known to be near the Trinity test site for first atomic bomb detonation in 1945. Other points of interest are the Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico Museum of Space History, Atari video game burial, American Armed Forces Museum and Alameda Park Zoo.
