The city of Charlotte is the largest city in the state of North Carolina. The city is located east of the Catawba River and southeast of the man-made Lake Norman. The area o f Charlotte was settled by Europeans; in 1755 the city signed a declaration releasing them from some British Rule, making it one of the first declarations leading to the American Revolution. The date of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was May 20, 1775, which is a holiday referred to as "MecDec" that is celebrated in Charlotte.
