The town of Ripoll near the French border was built around its monastery as early as the 9th century. From the 16th through 18th century, the region’s economy depended on the manufacturing of weapons and nails. Later, with the introduction of the railroad, it began producing textiles. Today its main attractions include the Romanesque Santa Maria de Ripoll monastery and the church of San Pere, which houses the Ethnographic Museum. Visit the museum to learn more about the traditions and culture of inland Catalonia and to see furniture, clothing, weapons, artifacts and more from the region’s history.
