About Temple of Literature

Home to Vietnam's first national university, the Imperial Academy, the Temple of Literature is one of the oldest structures in the city, founded in 1070 by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong. Dedicated to Confucius, the Temple features Vietnam's ancient architecture styles, despite reconstructions and damages from war over the millennia. Based on the Qufu Temple of Confucius in Shandong Province, China, the Temple of Literature covers 54,000 square metres, housing Van Lake, Giam Park, 5 courtyards, and the Stelae of Doctors - 116 steles (monuments) shaped as turtles, one of Vietnam's four holy animals.
